Meet Rebecca Kirk, M.A. MFT&C, LPC
Education
I have been a high school English teacher in Madison for a decade and hold a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy and Individual Counseling from Reformed Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of Arts from MS College in English Education. I increase my learning in both the educational and counseling spheres often, including recent study at the world-renown Creating Connections: New Frontiers in Science and Psychotherapy conference led by the famous leaders Drs. Siegel, Johnson, etc. In addition, I have a unique understanding of the learning process, having taught thousands of diverse adolescents. I was honored to receive both the 2012 Rosa Scott Teacher of the Year and the entire Madison Co. School District 2012 High School Teacher of the Year awards.
Being an educator, I love to learn from the best, and some of my specialized education in 2017 involves getting trained in two of the very best empirically proven and researched therapies:
1. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) used for trauma wounds, including PTSD
2. Gottman Method Couples Training Level 1 (taught by THE Drs. Gottman themselves) and Level 2.
Individuals/Couples---Identity, Anxiety, Depression, Trauma/PTSD, Grief, Relational Resolution, etc.
I specialize in working with individuals and couples who seek to better understand themselves and their relationships in the midst of home and work stressors. Helping people explore identity is a passion of mine, as is working with couples. In addition, I am trained in administering premarital testing to help couples insightfully prepare for potholes in their journey together. I specialize in helping women work through birth trauma and in relieving breastfeeding, parenting, and other anxieties as well. I also help college students transition into adulthood despite the many stressors that school and relationships play in their lives.
The extra investment I've dedicated to the Gottman Method Couple Trainings is a testimony of my passion to help couples in need, and it is a special strength of mine. If you and your partner are suffering from increased criticism, contempt, betrayal, stress in child rearing, or something else, please get some help now to protect your relationship because the average couple waits 6 years before they seek help! I'd love to help show you ways to rekindle your love and admiration for each other. I'm approved by the Gottman Institute to administer your relationship check-up by using Gottman's forty-year research and testing compilation and scoring system. I am currently available for evening sessions.
Adolescents--Developmental, Sexuality, Identity, Anxiety, Depression, Grief, Relational Resolution, etc.
Working with teenagers daily in my dual professions, I understand struggles adolescents face, and help them achieve autonomy and self-actualization during the midst of their transitional life challenges of anxiety, abuse, defiance, sexuality, relationships, physical sickness, divorce, and grief. Although most adolescents desire to work independently in therapy, I love to help facilitate family growth when appropriate too. I am passionate in my desire to communicate to adolescents that they are my joy and top priority. One of my specialties is working with gifted adolescents who often feel things more deeply. In a world of unsurpassed connectivity, I understand from both my professions that teenagers have sadly never been more lonely, downtrodden, and hopeless.
Counseling Philosophy
Although I am a Christian counselor, I often integrate certain secular methodologies, believing that man is made in the image of God, so God gives common grace to the world, which reflects His healthy design. I utilize methodologies of Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Object Relations Therapy, Attachment Theory, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, Gottman Marital Therapy, EMDR methodologies (while actively working towards certification), and others to individually aid clients in courageous growth. Even though man bears God's reflection, all are capable of anything and need an open, caring, unabashed therapist to reach goals without judgment. I do not agree with conversion therapies where religion is forced upon the disagreeing client. The best therapists have reached into the crevice of their soul's center and are unafraid to walk alongside others in the therapy room. It is my honor to help you achieve your healthy goals!
I can respond to non-emergency email and phone calls at [email protected] and at 601-896-7434.
